App Comparisons
Ticked vs DoseMed: which private pill reminder is right for you?
Both apps are built around privacy and keeping your data off someone else's server. Past that, they're solving genuinely different problems — here's how to tell which one fits how you actually think about medication.
If you've been comparing private, local-first medication apps, DoseMed has probably come up — it's positioned similarly to Ticked on privacy, and it's a legitimately well-regarded app in that space. But "privacy-first" isn't the whole story for either app, and the actual day-to-day experience is different enough that it's worth breaking down honestly rather than just comparing feature lists.
The core difference: before vs. after
DoseMed is built around the classic reminder model — it alerts you before you take something, with scheduling, dosage tracking, and (more recently) an AI assistant for medication questions. It's a comprehensive tool for staying on top of a regimen.
Ticked doesn't try to catch the moment before. It's built for the moment after — when the reminder's already happened, you've already acted on it, and you're standing there unsure whether you actually did. One tap when you take it, a timestamp to check when the doubt hits. That's the entire app.
Where the "privacy-first" claim actually differs
This is worth being precise about, because it's easy to assume "privacy-first" means the same thing everywhere. DoseMed has added an AI health assistant and iCloud backup since its earlier releases — both genuinely useful features, but an AI assistant answering medication questions typically requires sending some data to a server to generate a response, which is a different privacy model than fully local, on-device processing.
Ticked has no account, no cloud sync, and no AI features — everything stays on the device, full stop. That's a narrower feature set, but a more literal version of "your data never leaves your phone."

Worth knowing before you pick
A number of recent DoseMed reviews describe reliability issues — notifications that fire inconsistently, and difficulty editing a schedule once it's set. We can't verify individual reports, but it's a pattern that's shown up often enough to be worth factoring in if reminder reliability is your top priority. That's a genuinely different kind of risk than anything Ticked's simplicity introduces, since there's very little to go wrong in a single tap-and-timestamp design.
Who fits where
You're managing a complex regimen — multiple medications, interaction checking, detailed dosage history — and want one comprehensive app to handle scheduling and tracking together.
Your actual problem is the doubt moment, not forgetting to take something in the first place. You want the absolute minimum interaction — tap, check, done — with no streaks, no dashboard, and no cloud dependency of any kind.
DoseMed (or a similar app) for the advance reminder, Ticked for the after-the-fact confirmation. They're not mutually exclusive — they're solving different halves of the same day.
